What black and grey realism is

Realism builds a picture out of light and shadow instead of outlines. One black ink is laid down solid for the darkest shadows and diluted into a scale of greys for everything in between, so the skin itself becomes the highlight. No color, which is exactly why it reads like a photograph printed on the body.

Why the good ones are big

Detail needs room. A face, a statue or an animal holds its depth when it is given space, so realism pieces are usually planned larger and placed on broad, flat areas: the forearm, the upper arm and shoulder, the chest, the calf. Owen books the big ones as full-day sittings, often two days back to back, so the piece is finished as one thought.

What happens when it heals

Bringing a portrait

For a portrait, the photo decides the tattoo. Send the sharpest one you have, with the light coming from one side and the face filling the frame, and the artist will tell you whether it will hold up at the size you want.
